Vera Mann writes a monthly social column in Florida's Treasure Coast magazine, Blended. Below is an introduction to Vera Mann's social column:
Port St. Lucie resident, Vera Mann will be reporting on the pulse of our Treasure Coast’s social scene. She has lived in St. Lucie West for the past 17 years and quickly became involved in the social, political and artistic communities of the area.
“This has been an exciting period of growth especially in the African American community. The blending of cultures of Native Floridians, Caribbean, and newcomers from the various areas of the North gives a unique backdrop for diversity here in St Lucie County”, Vera says.
Vera is currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Cultural Affairs Council (CAC) and has been a member for the past seven years. She is an active member of the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society and if you come to the weekly jam session in Port St. Lucie you are likely to hear her sing. Vera is also the immediate past president of Church Women United, which is made up of many religious denominations throughout St. Lucie County.
She has been a pioneer of African American music, art and dance. As a member of the dance company, The Dyerettes, she toured the United States, Canada and the Caribbean with such notables as The Count Basie Band, Tito Puente, Sarah Vaughn, Duke Ellington, Tony Bennett, Nancy Wilson, The Four Tops and many others.
Vera married Green Bay Packer Hall of Famer, Bob Mann who upon retirement became an attorney in Detroit. He passed away in 2006.
Through her devotion to service oriented projects she served as director of the Detroit Chapter of Bench and Bar Spouses annual fashion show. She also served as chairperson of the Board of Management for the YWCA of Detroit before relocating to Florida.
In her spare time Vera enjoys painting in acrylics and has donated some of her works to the CAC to raise funds for grants. She is also a voracious reader who enjoys the lively discussions of her African American Literature reading group.
We welcome Vera Mann to the staff of BLENDED.
